Weed Abatement

Many Dallas citizens consider out-of-control weeds, tall grass, and brush a potential health and/or traffic hazard since they contribute to allergies and, through their seeds, the growth of additional weeds which can impair the views of motorists. The City's Fire Department is also concerned with the fire hazard created by dry vegetation during the summer months. The fire hazard level can quickly become extreme during hot, dry weather.

The Dallas Municipal Code addresses these concerns by requiring all weeds and grass be kept under 10" in height. The property owners are responsible for mowing their lawns and keeping their grass and weeds under the 10" requirement, including the grass strips abutting the property between the sidewalks and the city streets.

The City's Code Services employees actively engage with property owners and citizens during the spring and summer months to remind them of their responsibility to maintain their grass and weeds, consistent with the code requirements. A property owner who fails to comply with the code requirements will be given a seven-day notice to cut and remove their tall grass and/or weeds, at which point the City will abate the obnoxious vegetation by contracting for mowing services. The property owner is then responsible for paying the total costs for the abatement conducted by the City.
