The Fair Housing Act (amended) states that no one may discriminate against a person based on, race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (families with children), or handicap, when renting or selling a home.
Oregon includes the following additional protection categories: source of income, marital status, sexual orientation and gender identity. Also, there are specific rights for survivors of domestic violence. As of 2014, the Oregon Revised Statutes also includes language that prohibits a landlord from refusing to rent to a tenant who wants to use a HUD Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (the tenant still needs to meet the qualifications to rent the dwelling unit).
If you have questions regarding Fair Housing rules, regulation or guidance or if you feel that you have been a victim of housing discrimination, please contact the Fair Housing Council of Oregon or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
